Welcome to Life on the Edge’s Wildlife Gardening (Brixham) project.

We are excited to be working with a number of valued partners to really engage the people of Brixham in the idea of creating small but invaluable wildlife havens throughout the town. It’s widely understood that small islands of habitat are of relatively poor wildlife benefit compared with the larger tracts of habitat needed, but when those small islands are in large numbers across a relatively small area, that’s when they become a wildlife corridor enabling invertebrates and other creatures to move freely from habitat to forage and so have a chance to thrive. This is why we’ve working at a ‘whole-community’ level to create change.

The project involves:

  • Giving away 1000 copies of the Gardening for Wildlife brochure. This incredible brochure was written and produced by the highly skilled volunteers at The Habitat Group, and distribution is enabled through Brixham Community Partnership. Pick up your own copy for free from one of Brixham’s community venues (see list lower down this page).
  • Teaming up with the WI Brixham to distribute many packets of wildflower seed across the town, along with information cards, to ensure ‘pocket meadows’ are created far and wide.
  • Working with Pride in Brixham to remodel one of the public gardens on the harbourside that they are caring for. Their ‘Bayview’ site will benefit from a new wildflower meadow area, improved access, and some new horticultural pollinator-friendly plants to ensure the garden continues to look attractive while the meadow establishes itself.
  • Willow artist, Vivienne Turner, will be hosting a willow-weaving workshop at the community allotment to create obelisks in order to support the growing of narrow-leaved everlasting pea – a particular favourite of many invertebrates.
  • The LotE team will be hosting two public events to encourage you to get involved. To join us, you can book your free place through our ticket shop on TicketSource, or you can email our Community Officer, Stuart for more information.
    • 7 May – Community walk with Sam, our Conservation Officer from Buglife, enjoying the coastal landscape and spotting invertebrates and wildflowers as we go. This will be a 2-2.5 hour long walk, though we’ll walk at a slow pace. Meet at the Berry Head Visitor’s Centre for a 10:30am start.
    • 14 May – Learning and doing session about insect surveying and recording. Our Conservation Officer Sam will show us how to spot invertebrates and how to record sightings so that we can contribute to the national record. We’ll also spend plenty of time having a go. 10:30-12:30pm, meet at Sharkham Point car park.
