Through our Life on the Edge project ( LotE), there are a range of opportunities for people to take part and get involved. Through this programme our volunteers will learn new skills, make new friends, feel empowered to take positive environmental action and gain health and wellbeing benefits of being active and involved in nature. The opportunities are open to anyone, whether you want to build skills and gain experience to help you get a job in the countryside sector, or just want to spend some of your free time helping us to secure a better future for nature in South Devon.

If you would like to know more or would like to have a chat about how to join in, please email us. For more information on the project please look at this webpage Life on the Edge project.

Volunteering opportunities – Life on the Edge

Specialist survey volunteers

Volunteers who already have a level of knowledge and experience will be enrolled to assist with entomological and botanical surveys for some of our more specialist species. They will work alongside experts at ‘Blitz’ events to expand their knowledge and build confidence to enable them to carry on with surveys and monitoring throughout the season. They will be invited to share their skills with the beginner volunteers, encouraging those who may want to progress and learn more.

LotE survey volunteers

These volunteers might be beginners who want to get involved in species surveying and monitoring across the project area and in their own communities, or more experienced people who want to learn more. They will be more generalised surveys and designed to help people start to get involved. We will provide training workshops to help build your skills, such as Long-horned bee counts, Pollinator Monitoring scheme counts (PomS), Big Butterfly Counts, Oil Beetle night surveys.

LotE engagement volunteers

These volunteers will help at events, activities, schools etc. They may bring specific skills, eg photography, walk stewards. They can access new skills through the workshop programme.

Conservation Volunteers

These volunteers will work with to carry out LotE habitat works for conservation of species. We wil organise a monthly task programme of winter and summer works which will be open to anyone to come along and join in.

Community Volunteers

These volunteers will be groups of people working in their community to carry out LotE environmental enhancement projects or engagement projects. They will be supported through the training and workshop programme and the community grants.
